Our Students

Osteopathic Medicine

Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine (AZCOM) DO students at HOME clinics perform the History and Physical exams of each patient. The students determine differential diagnoses and potential treatment plans before presenting to the clinical preceptor. After the case presentation, the DO students work with the preceptor, pharmacy, OMT scholars, and other healthcare programs to ensure the patient is treated accordingly. In addition, students attend various educational events at the shelters to promote healthier lifestyle tips and mental health awareness.

Physical Therapy

The Doctor of Physical Therapy Program H.O.M.E. division hosts one monthly PT Clinic at the Justa Center to serve the community’s unsheltered older adult population. They also have started a brand-new education event called Stretch & Destress at the Saint Vicent de Paul, Justa Center, and Vista Colina shelters. This event offers individuals the chance to learn how to decrease stress through stretching and relaxation. They host an outreach event with Project C.U.R.E. in Tempe, AZ every few months to help sort and package medical supplies that are sent to communities in need worldwide.

Physician Assistant

Physician assistant students volunteer every week at CASS, Vista Colina and UMOM shelters to provide quality healthcare to the underserved population of Phoenix, AZ. Students are a part of an interprofessional team that completes the patients’ full medical history and physical exam, presents the case to a physician or PA and collaborates with the preceptor to decide on a diagnosis and treatment plan. They also provide educational presentations to patients about various topics of healthcare, such as nutrition and diabetes prevention. HOME is a great way for PA students to apply the material they learn in their courses in a hands-on setting alongside experienced physicians and PAs, while also giving back to the community.

Podiatry

Podiatry students attend clinics at the Justa Center and St Vincent de Paul. Students work in pairs to take histories, perform physical exams of the lower extremities, and present their findings to the preceptor.  Students and the preceptor then work together to help patients receive proper treatment and education to improve their health.  Podiatry students also lead and help out with education events to better the health of our local communities.

Pharmacy

Pharmacy student volunteers participate in interprofessional groups weekly at CASS and Vista Colina shelters. Within the interprofessional groups, the pharmacy students assist with patient interviews focusing on the history of present illness and medication counseling. Pharmacy student volunteers also participate in educational events by giving presentations to patients on various health topics at UMOM and throughout The Valley. Pharmacy coordinators are responsible for operating and maintaining the on-site pharmacy at the two shelters, CASS and Vista Colina.

Veterinary Medicine

  • Meet the compassionate and dedicated veterinary team a part of the H.O.M.E. program at MWU. Committed to making a positive impact on both the lives of animals and their human companions, our team comprises enthusiastic veterinary students collaborating closely with human healthcare students. Together, we are on a mission to provide free, high-quality medical care to the underserved population in our local community.

Guided by compassion, empathy, and inclusivity, we believe that the bond between humans and their furry friends is invaluable. Through the H.O.M.E. program, our veterinary team offers an array of essential services, including vaccines, wellness check-ups, and medical treatments, all provided free of charge. Our goal is to create a bridge between the streets and shelters, enabling individuals to transition with their pets to a better life and more secure future. The H.O.M.E. veterinary team is committed to extending our reach and influence by organizing animal clinics in areas that need our support the most. We have teamed up with St. Vincent de Paul, an organization renowned for its dedication to aiding the homeless population, to host wellness clinics on the third Saturday of every month. This collaboration allows us to offer veterinary services directly to the communities that require it the most.

Passionate about animal welfare and community outreach, our veterinary team is driven by the belief that by caring for the pets that mean the world to their owners, we are also enhancing the well-being of the people who love them. With our diverse skill sets, unwavering dedication, and shared vision, we are proud to stand united under the banner of the H.O.M.E. program, making a difference one furry friend at a time.

Occupational Therapy

Students of Occupational Therapy contribute to the Interprofessional care teams by engaging with our community through therapeutic activities while leveraging a client centered approach. OT students are in a unique role where we can use a combination of educational and therapeutic techniques to help our clients achieve their wellness goals by identifying areas of health improvement and treating them with the use of meaningful activities. As aspiring occupational therapists and members of the H.O.M.E organization we hope to set out into our community and provide engaging therapeutic activities or client education in an effort to promote independence, restore dignity, increase social engagement, or build a road to wellness for our clients and community.

Biomedical Sciences

Students from Biomedical Sciences, attend clinic (CASS) every month to manage the patient intake stations for both female and male populations. Biomed volunteers also assist with measuring patient blood pressure and glucometer readings, as well as any other additional tasks specific to the clinic operations.

Speech-Language Pathology

Students in the speech-language pathology program aim to provide education and screening services pertaining to communication disorders and challenges related to speech, language, voice and swallowing. By collaborating with organizations in the HOME network, the program extends its reach to underserved populations, supporting access to essential services regardless of their socio-economic status. The SLP program continuously strives to incorporate interdisciplinary collaboration to provide comprehensive care at HOME events and effectively address participants’ diverse needs.

Clinical Psychology

Clinical psychology students complete psychoeducational presentations at several sites around the valley, including CASS, Vista Colina, and UMOM. Presentations may be focused on topics such as stress management, negative effects of substance abuse, and coping skills for anxiety. The clinical psychology HOME volunteers occasionally utilize experiential activities, and past activities have included making stress balls and sensory water bottles.
